SS WINTHROP VICTORY 3 PHOTOS

  1. Hi Bill, my name is Jason, I'm a volunteer aboard the SS Red Oak Victory. I was just on the Winthrop Victory Monday, April 20, 2009 out in the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet. Unfotunately, the Winthrop is so far, far gone. She had 4 inches of water inside her deckhouse on the port side, due to water leaking through the rusted-through overheads. Because of the high heat, and the rainwater leaking in, she's basically a sauna. There was condensation all over everything in the engine room, and rust was everywhere. The internals of the poor old girl smelled of rotting steel and wood. Occasionally, a porthole gets left open, and pigeons start roosting inside the ship. There was pigeon crap, pigeon eggs, and the skeletons of dead pigeons everywhere. In addition to the Winthrop, we were crossed over the Rider and Earlham Victory. We didn't get to board these ships, though. The Pan American was on a different row, so we weren't able to visit her, but she had a pronounced list to port, and is supposedly filling with rainwater, also. This is a shame, because her holds contain TONS of spare Victory Ship parts.

Our ship was on board salvaging parts for the restoration of our Victory Ship, and the Winthrop has been heavily picked-over. Send me an email at martinihenry@saber.net, and I'd be happy to share my pictures from my time aboard her yesterday. Cheers, Jason.

  5. Hi, Bill. If you are still checking this blog, would you get in touch with me? I am trying to locate a photograph of the Winthrop Victory from the 1940s for my dad. He served as Radio Officer aboard the ship and was in Japan when the war ended. I am hoping to give it to him as a present. He was 18 at the time. You can reach me at better decisions@cox.net.
